What is Advair Diskus used for?

Advair Diskus is a long acting inhaler prescribed to manage and prevent shortness of breath and wheezing associated with asthma and treatment of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). It’s function is to make breathing easier by relaxing the muscles in the airways and treating asthma in patients. This is a combination of Fluticasone propionate (corticosteroid) / Salmeterol (salbutamol beta 2 agonist). Depending on your condition these two medications can work better to control asthma and COPD symptoms better than when they are used alone. Breathing problems can disrupt one's personal, social and professional life. This is generally taken long term to reduce these symptoms and can help to prevent worsening of symptoms. It is important to keep taking this medication even if you feel better as symptoms can return if you cease taking this without first consulting your doctor. One of the most common doses is Advair Diskus 250/50 mcg and Advair HFA.

Advair Diskus Information

How to use Advair Diskus?

When you begin taking this your doctor should describe its use and there should be an instructional pamphlet provided as a reference. This is not intended to be used to treat asthma attacks as it will not work quickly enough. You should have a rescue inhaler ready to manage sudden asthma. If any questions that were not addressed by your doctor or are not included in the leaflet, be sure to contact a doctor or pharmacist for clarification as this medication will not work effectively if not used properly.

When taking Advair do not exhale into the device. If you need to use another inhalation device along with advair be sure to wait a minute after taking advair before taking your next medication. Once you have finished taking your dose it is important to rinse any leftover medication from your mouth to prevent irritation or infection. It may take at least a week for the medication to yield tangible benefits.

If your breathing problems get worse or do not improve. Be sure to contact your doctor. Do not take more than what is recommended by your doctor as it will not accelerate treatment and may increase the risk and severity of side effects or allergic reactions. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing as this may affect child growth. Inform your doctor if you have ocular herpes simplex or a compromised immune system.
