Spiriva Handihaler is prescribed to treat and prevent the symptoms of Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD). This can include shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing. It is also prescribed to manage bronchitis and emphysema which have similar symptoms. The medicine helps you breathe more easily by relaxing the muscles of the airways. This allows for more room for the air to flow to and from the lungs. This is not meant to treat sudden breathing concerns as it will not work long enough to be effective. Spiriva Handihaler is a long-term maintenance drug that improves your condition when used regularly and consistently.

How to use Spiriva Handihaler?
To get the best results this medication has to be used correctly. Your doctor or pharmacist should be able to explain or even demonstrate how to use this properly. The device should also come with a patient information pamphlet with a diagram illustrating its use. Call your doctor or pharmacist if there are any additional questions.
The capsules are meant to be used with the handihaler device and the device is not intended to be used to administer any other medications. Seek immediate medical attention if you accidentally get the powder in your eyes and experience impaired vision or dilated pupils.
When you remove a capsule from the packaging be sure to use it immediately. The capsule is placed in the chamber and secured the mouthpiece until you hear a “click” sound. With the mouthpiece facing upward press the green button that pierces the capsule. Do not handle a pierced capsule with your bare hands. Wash your hands if you do touch a pierced capsule.
Breath out as much as you can. Be sure not to exhale into the mouthpiece. Close your lips around the mouthpiece and breathe in slowly and deeply. You should hear a vibration if this is done properly. When you are finished breathing, hold your breath for a moment and remove the mouthpiece from your mouth.
Repeat the process until you have completed the recommended dose. Discard any leftover material from the inhalation device and keep it clean and dry. Spiriva can contribute to enlarged prostate, narrow angle glaucoma and/or eye pain.
